Paq’tnkek First Nations Traditional Powwow

Festivals & Events in the The Northumberland Shore

Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation was established on March 3, 1820 in Antigonish County and is located 24km east of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The name Paqtnkek, meaning “by the bay”, is a distinction emphasizing the importance of the local bay and its resources to the Mi’kmaw people.

The Paqtnkek Powwow has been a tradition in the community for over 20 years and is known as one of the oldest powwows in the Maritime provinces. It is also known to hold the largest arbor east of Quebec which is constructed with cedar. The Powwow is a huge success every year thanks to the dedication of community members who volunteer their valuable time, support from our partners and the love of our community by other Mi’kmaw friends and family from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
